So back in the day when I was a young lad, my family would take frequent trips back “home” to the Wild and Wonderful West Virginia. For a kid like myself, I always enjoyed these short vacations. I got to hang out with one of the coolest dudes on the plant, my cousin, who over the years has turned into somewhat of a werewolf.
Anyway, my point is that my brother, my cousin, and I would spend a lot of time and sleepless nights watching “B movies” on TNT and TBS. If you’re old enough to remember when those stations showed movies non-stop, then you know what I’m talking about. They would come on around 8:00 or 9:00 in the evening, and with commercial breaks every 10-15 minutes, an hour long movie could last up to two.
If you know anything about me, I love the phrase “remember when.” Recently my brother and cousin stopped in to pay me a visit, which was a wonderful time. This got me a little homesick and reminiscing of the times way back when. For some reason I had forgotten about those “TBSNT” movies, then all of a sudden in a whirlwind of nostalgia I quickly remembered one of the greatest movies of all time. Maximum Overdrive.
For those poor souls that haven’t witnessed this incredible slice of cinema, based off of a Stephen King short story “Trucks”, it stars the one and only Mighty Ducks All Star Coach Bombay – EMILIO ESTEVEZ, and… well… Emilio Estevez. I know, I know, I can stop there, but it also has a cameo appearance by AC\DC, involves cars and trucks possessed by aliens, it was filmed in Wilmington, NC, and there’s total carnage.
If you haven’t seen this film, please, please, please go find it. I haven’t had any luck on Netflix, but I’m positive you can find a copy in the $2 bin at your local DVD store. I’ve personally seen this film roughly 200 times (no kidding), and I plan on watching it about 1000 more. Do yourself a favor.
EMILIOOOOOOOOO!
maximum overdrive changed my life.
