Some co-workers and myself were discussing the sinal trend in social networking sites. LiveJournal, Friendster were the big dogs back in the day. I remember having a Friendster account and mocking those LiveJournal bloggers (now look at me). Of course, back then blogging wasn't a real word, now it's definitely in the Webster. Around 2003, a little website became known to the few Internet warriors of our time as MySpace. Everyone balked at the site calling it a Friendster ripoff. MySpace soon became popular in the college and university circle. Close on the heels of MySpace came Facebook. Facebook was a little behind the tech curve, but quickly gained popularity due to the extensive networking of schools and their alumni. MySpace started losing ground to Facebook but with the introduction of photo albums, videos, band-spaces, and blogging, MySpace soared to the number 1 spot of social networking.
Friendster and LiveJournal took a decided back seat to the new princes of social networks. Facebook followed suit and integrated applications into their user profiles along with expanding outside of the university networks. Over the past two years the number 1 spot has revolved between MySpace and Facebook. As I'm writing this, it seems that all my friends are discussing their Facebook accounts and less on their MySpace. As most people have both types of accounts it can get pretty intense trying to keep up with people on two different sites. Also with the addition of the Blackberry applications for Facebook and MySpace, your very own cell phone (if I can still call them that) is the "Place for Friends."
Whatever site you decide on is up to you, they're both great for keeping in touch with your friends. Something we've learned a lot here being so far away from family. I don't condemn any of these sites.. except maybe LiveJournal.. who decided it would be a good idea to give the public a voice anyway?? *wink*
Do you think Tom has a Facebook account?
